The oceans cover 70 percent of our planet. They provide a basis of existence for the world’s 7.3 billion inhabitants, both as a source of food and as a foundation for jobs, value creation and welfare development. According to researchers, 90 percent of marine areas have not yet been studied, and offer countless opportunities.
bet体育游戏However, the oceans are also under greater pressure than ever before from overfishing, coastal pollution, habitat destruction, climate change and ocean acidification, and one of the most pressing challenges of all, plasticisation of the ocean. The need for knowledge and solutions is pressing.
Marine life – both above and below the surface – has fascinated me since my childhood growing up in Molde, Norway. The idea of an ocean-going research and expedition vessel is therefore something that has been on my mind for many years. This vessel will be a platform for learning, sharing knowledge, improving understanding and developing forward-looking solutions for the benefit of future generations.
Aker BioMarine and I have been working with WWF Norway and Nina Jensen since 2006. WWF has been an important partner in the development of our sustainable, environmentally certified krill fisheries operation in the Southern Ocean – one of the world’s most sensitive and vulnerable marine habitats. We have learned much about the challenges and opportunities presented by the Antarctic, and want to learn even more about both the Southern Ocean and other marine areas. My hope is that the research vessel and the people aboard will make a difference in the search for even more sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions.
There may not be any economic rationale for the private construction of such a ship, but the case is compelling from the oceans’ point of view. I look forward to working with scientists, marine experts, environmentalists and positive, knowledgeable, solution-oriented people both in Norway and internationally. The ship will be offered as an arena for scientists and explorers from all over the world. The vessel will be built to the highest standard making it suitable for charter to private individuals, companies and institutions, which will generate research funding, and my family and I will also charter and use the ship as a place for recreation and inspiration.

bet体育游戏The ship will be a Research Expedition Vessel (REV).
bet体育游戏Independent scientists, marine experts, and innovative thinkers from all over the world will have access to the ship and the on-board technology. The objective is to increase knowledge and promote innovation to overcome some of the greatest challenges we currently face:
- Climate change and marine pollution due to increasing CO2 emissions.
- Plastic and other pollution
- Overfishing and bycatch
bet体育游戏The new ship is designed to operate in remote and vulnerable waters for long periods without additional supplies and/or external support.
bet体育游戏The shipbuilding group Vard in Norway has been commissioned to build the ship, which will be equipped with world-leading Norwegian maritime technology from suppliers including Kongsberg Maritime, Simrad and Seaonics.
The ship is scheduled for delivery during the summer of 2020.
This is the three-fold purpose of the REV project:

The ship has been designed by renowned ship designer Espen Øino in collaboration with Vard Design and leading researchers and experts in Norway. REV will be one of the world’s most advanced marine research and expedition vessels in operation.
bet体育游戏Following delivery mid 2020, the ship will undertake testing and research in northern waters. The ship will also be available for charter.
bet体育游戏The ship’s holding company will be Rosellinis Four-10, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Røkke family company TRG.
Rosellinis Four-410 has entered into a collaboration agreement with WWF Norway on further development of the research and expedition project.
